I was developing a design that looked almost exactly the same for use in sports guards and footwear using my own Flux 3D printer. I was also direct printing skeletal frames and channels for polyester tensioning cables and lacing systems on footwear uppers when I worked at Nike 2 years ago. Sadly they saw no use for it and the vison for the project was deemed unfeasible for their product margins.
Recently, Adidas has really come to the forefront utilizing 3D printing on footwear and sporting goods applications… along with a huge lead in brand popularity. Gee, I wonder why!
